In July 1962, 20-year-old Audrey Backeberg vanished from Reedsburg, Wisconsin, leaving behind her husband and two young children. She had told her family she was heading to the local woolen mill to collect her paycheck but never returned. Shortly after her disappearance, a 14-year-old babysitter for the family revealed that she and Backeberg had hitchhiked to Madison and then taken a bus to Indianapolis.
