Joanne Elaine Coughlin, a 21-year-old aspiring actress and student at Youngstown State University, disappeared under troubling circumstances in the winter of 1974. A graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School where she was the head majorette, Joanne was known to be part of a close-knit family with three sisters. On December 27, 1974, she worked her job at the local Jewish Community Center and told colleagues of her plans for the evening: a visit to the European Health Spa on Boardman-Canfield Road, for which she had recently purchased a membership, followed by a meeting with her boyfriend at his home. Joanne never made it to her boyfriend's house and was never heard from again. Her 1968 Ford Fairlane, a four-door vehicle with license plate number H4482G, also vanished and has never been found. The last time her family saw her was during their Christmas celebration just two days prior to her disappearance. The details surrounding Joanne's last known activities are mired in uncertainty. While a signature in her name was found on the sign-in sheet at the health spa, her niece has asserted that the handwriting does not match Joanne's, and no witnesses have ever come forward to confirm they saw her at the facility that night. In the days following her disappearance, a concerning event unfolded when a young woman attempted to withdraw $800 from Joanne's bank account at a drive-through window of the Mahoning National Bank. The teller, who had been alerted by Joanne's mother, became suspicious and asked the woman to come inside. The unidentified woman then left and never attempted to access the account again. The teller later confirmed that the person who tried to withdraw the money was not Joanne. This incident, coupled with the fact that Joanne had recently received a $3,400 settlement from a car accident, fueled her family's belief that she did not leave of her own volition. The investigation into Joanne's disappearance has spanned decades without a definitive resolution. Authorities have explored various leads, including a tip about a screaming woman being dragged from a car into a truck near quarries on Villa Marie Road on the night Joanne went missing. Despite searches of the quarries, which were paid for by Joanne's sister using money from her accident settlement, no evidence was ever found. Police were able to identify the woman who attempted to withdraw money from Joanne's account, as well as two male companions who were allegedly involved in the local drug scene. The woman claimed to have received Joanne's bankbook from the two men, who in turn said they had stolen her belongings from a party but denied any knowledge of her whereabouts. Authorities theorized that Joanne may have been robbed and murdered, with her car and body possibly disposed of in one of the nearby quarries. Despite these theories and the passage of time, her case remains unsolved. Joanne Coughlin was legally declared dead in 1985, but for her family and community, the search for answers continues.
