Steven Paul Thomas, a 19-year-old from Remsen, New York, was last seen on April 12, 1976, during a hiking trip with five companions near Mount Marcy, the highest peak in New York. Steven had joined the group at the last minute and appeared distant from the others throughout the hike. After reaching a lean-to near the summit, Steven decided to venture out alone toward the summit around 3:00 PM, despite the group's protests.
