On a cold spring day in April of 1976, 19-year-old Steven Paul Thomas of Remsen, New York, embarked on a hiking trip that would become a decades-long mystery. He joined five other young men for a trek up Mount Marcy, the highest peak in New York State. Steven was a last-minute addition to the group, invited by his childhood friend, Bruce Weaver. Accounts suggest that Steven seemed distant and did not interact much with the other members of the hiking party, with the exception of Weaver. The group set up camp in a lean-to about two miles from the summit. Around 3:00 PM on April 12th, despite the protests of his companions, Steven decided to push on towards the summit by himself. He left his backpack and all provisions behind, taking only a knife with him. He was last seen wearing faded blue jeans, a t-shirt, a blue parka with a yellow slicker, boots, and yellow rubber gloves, clothing that was insufficient for the freezing temperatures and harsh conditions on the mountain.
As daylight began to fade and Steven had not returned, his friends grew increasingly worried. Two members of the group, Bruce Weaver and Robert Bromley, attempted a search for him around 10:00 PM, but were quickly forced to turn back due to high winds and dangerously low wind-chill temperatures. The following day, the remaining members of the group continued to search for Steven to no avail. Realizing the gravity of the situation, three of the hikers made their way down the mountain to alert authorities, officially reporting him missing on the evening of April 13th. This initiated one of the most extensive search and rescue operations ever conducted on Mount Marcy. For two weeks, helicopters, search dogs, and experienced rangers scoured the treacherous terrain, but no trace of Steven was ever found. The official search was called off on April 21, 1976.
The disappearance of Steven Thomas has been the subject of much speculation over the years. Some theories suggest he may have intentionally vanished, as he had recently returned from a trip out West and had been secretive about his future plans. However, his family has always maintained that he was close to them and would not have left without a word.
