William John Smith, a 37-year-old resident of Fredonia, New York, went missing on June 23, 1983, under mysterious circumstances. Smith was last seen in Port Rowan, Ontario, operating a large white 31-foot Bertram cruiser, a 1977 model with twin engines. Witnesses observed the boat leaving port, heading toward the north channel, which leads into Lake Erie. This was the last confirmed sighting of both Smith and his boat, raising concerns that he might have encountered trouble at sea.
