William John Smith, a 37-year-old resident of Fredonia, New York, went missing on June 23, 1983, under mysterious circumstances. Smith was last seen in Port Rowan, Ontario, operating a large white 31-foot Bertram cruiser, a 1977 model with twin engines. Witnesses observed the boat leaving port, heading toward the north channel, which leads into Lake Erie.
