Maureen Therese Sherman, a 47-year-old woman from Miami, Florida, went missing on May 2, 1985. She was last seen leaving her home in her red Plymouth Reliant K station wagon. According to reports, she had expressed intentions to drive her car into a nearby canal. Neither she nor her vehicle were ever seen again.
For nearly 40 years, the case remained unsolved until January 5, 2024, when volunteer divers from the Sunshine State Sonar team discovered her car submerged in a canal near her
home. The car was found 32 feet underwater, entangled in vegetation and branches. The windows were closed, and the vehicle was sealed, leading divers to believe that her body was inside.
The Miami-Dade Police Department confirmed the discovery and began the process of recovering the car and the human remains. While the body has not yet been officially identified as Sherman's, the divers are confident it is her. The case has brought a sense of closure to her family, who were informed that Maureen has finally been brought home.
The discovery was part of a larger effort by the Sunshine State Sonar team and Adventures with Purpose, another volunteer dive organization, to solve cold cases involving missing persons. In just six days, they managed to bring five people home, including Maureen Sherman.
