On July 7, 1985, 29-year-old Gail Katz-Bierenbaum vanished from her Manhattan, New York, apartment. Her husband, Dr. Robert Bierenbaum, initially told police that she had stormed out of their home after an argument, possibly to go to Central Park. However, as the investigation into her disappearance unfolded, a much darker picture of their marriage began to emerge. Friends and family described a volatile and troubled relationship, with Gail confiding in them that her husband was controlling and abusive. She had even filed a police report in 1983, alleging that he had choked her into unconsciousness. The couple was reportedly in marriage counseling, and Gail had told friends she was planning to leave her husband. As detectives delved deeper into the case, inconsistencies in Robert Bierenbaum's story became apparent. A significant revelation was that on the day of his wife's disappearance, Bierenbaum, a licensed pilot, had rented a small plane and flown for two hours over the Atlantic Ocean. He had neglected to mention this flight during his initial interviews with investigators. This discovery led authorities to suspect that he had murdered his wife, dismembered her body, and disposed of her remains in the ocean. Despite the lack of a body or any physical evidence directly linking him to the crime, the circumstantial case against him continued to build over the years. Investigators also learned that Gail had received a letter from her husband's psychiatrist warning that he could be dangerous. For years, the case remained cold as Robert Bierenbaum moved on with his life, relocating and remarrying. However, the tireless efforts of Gail's family and law enforcement eventually led to a breakthrough. In 2000, fifteen years after her disappearance, Robert Bierenbaum was arrested and charged with the murder of his wife. The trial was based entirely on circumstantial evidence, but the prosecution successfully painted a damning picture of a man with a motive and the means to commit the crime. He was found guilty of second-degree murder and sentenced to 20 years to life in prison. For two decades, Bierenbaum maintained his innocence. However, in a stunning turn of events, he confessed to killing his wife during a parole hearing in 2020. He admitted to strangling her during an argument and then disposing of her body from an airplane over the ocean, finally confirming the long-held suspicions of investigators and bringing a painful chapter to a close for Gail's loved ones. Her body has never been recovered.
