Velda Leyba Missing Person Case

Velda Leyba, a 39-year-old woman from Albuquerque, New Mexico, was last seen on December 6, 1992, the night of her daughter’s birthday. Velda had called her daughter earlier in the evening to say she was leaving a friend's house in the South Valley to head over and celebrate the occasion. However, she never arrived and has not been heard from since. At the time of her disappearance, Velda was driving a light blue 1987 Chrysler LeBaron. Nearly three months later, on February 25, 1993, the vehicle was found abandoned near Interstate 25 and Isleta Boulevard. Her personal belongings, including her purse, were still inside the car.

Suspicion of foul play grew after it was revealed that Velda had been seen at a house on Wheeler Street, a location that would later become the site of another woman’s disappearance. Lisa Duncan, a friend of Velda's, went missing from the same residence five months after Velda's disappearance. Duncan’s remains were eventually found, but Velda has never been located. A confidential informant came forward in 2011, alleging that both women were killed in that house. Investigators searched the property nearly two decades later, finding blood on the carpeting, which had not been changed since the time of their disappearances. Despite this, Velda’s case remains unsolved, and she is still classified as an endangered missing person. Authorities suspect she may have been murdered.

Velda’s family, and law enforcement, continue to seek answers in her case, which remains a haunting cold case in Albuquerque.
