In the autumn of 1996, the small community of McLean, New York, was shaken by the disappearance of 16-year-old Sarah Hajney. On October 4, 1996, Sarah, a high school cheerleader, and her best friend, Jennifer Bolduc, also 16, vanished while they were house-sitting at Sarah's home. Concern grew when the two girls failed to attend school, prompting their families to report them missing. The discovery of Sarah's father's abandoned car suggested that foul play was involved in their disappearance. The investigation into the girls' disappearance quickly focused on John B. Andrews, a neighbor of the Hajney family who had a criminal history. It was determined that Andrews had abducted the teenagers and taken them to a remote cabin. There, he subjected them to horrific acts of violence before murdering them. In an attempt to conceal his crimes, Andrews dismembered their bodies and scattered their remains across several counties in upstate New York. Authorities arrested Andrews shortly after the girls' remains were discovered, and he was indicted on 26 counts, including murder, kidnapping, and aggravated sexual abuse. However, before he could face trial, Andrews died by suicide in his jail cell on November 2, 1996. The tragic and violent deaths of Sarah Hajney and Jennifer Bolduc left a lasting impact on the town of Dryden, marking a dark period in the community's history. The case is considered a homicide, and though partial remains were recovered, the case technically remains open.
