On a clear September day in 2005, Michelle Vanek, a 35-year-old mother of four from Lakewood, Colorado, embarked on her first climb of a 'fourteener,' one of Colorado's peaks exceeding 14,000 feet in elevation. An accomplished triathlete and marathon runner, she was in excellent physical condition for the challenge.
