Thomas Leonard Irwin, known to his loved ones as Tom, was a 73-year-old man who embarked on a solo road trip from Los Angeles, California, to his home in Indiana in January 2024. On January 14th, he made a stop in Cortez, Colorado. The following day, January 15th, he drove into the vast and historic landscape of Mesa Verde National Park. It was here that his journey took an unforeseen and tragic turn.
His 1994 Buick Le Sabre was found parked in the headquarters area of the park on that same day, but there was no sign of Tom. An investigation into his whereabouts was launched, piecing together his last known movements.
Authorities believe that on that Monday, Thomas Irwin set out to hike the Petroglyph Point Trail, a scenic and rugged path within the national park. Evidence found on his phone, including a photograph of a distinctive rock formation, suggested he had been on or near this trail. He was reportedly wearing a light brown fleece shirt, a flannel overshirt with horizontal and diagonal stripes, blue jeans, and light brown Timberland work boots. He may have also been wearing a dark-colored ball cap with 'NHRA' on the front and prescription transition lens glasses. A blue bracelet, possibly a temporary one, was on his left wrist.
Extensive search and rescue operations were initiated in the challenging terrain of Mesa Verde National Park. Despite the efforts of search teams, his whereabouts remained unknown for a period of time. Tragically, the search concluded with the discovery that Thomas Irwin had passed away. The case, which began as a search for a missing person, is now closed, bringing a somber end to the uncertainty surrounding his disappearance.
