In the pre-dawn hours of Sunday, June 28, 2009, 43-year-old Robert Mark Peters was last seen at the Hidden Valley Campground in Greenville, a rural area in Wayne County, Missouri. He was on a camping trip with two friends, with plans to meet his wife and two daughters later that day for a family outing by the river. The last known sighting of Robert was around 4:30 a.m. by a fellow camper who reported that a man matching Robert's description approached him, seeming disoriented, and asked for directions to his own campsite. Roughly twenty minutes later, the man returned and asked for the same directions again. When Robert's friends awoke at 8 a.m., he was nowhere to be found at their campsite, though his pickup truck and duffel bag had been left behind.
The discovery of his absence triggered an immediate and extensive search of the rugged terrain surrounding the campground. After his friends' initial search proved unsuccessful, they alerted Wayne County authorities. The official search effort grew to include the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the Water Patrol, and authorities from the neighboring Bollinger County.
