Sofia Khan, a 9-year-old girl from Chicago, Illinois, was last seen on June 9, 2010, while vacationing with her family near Holland, Wisconsin, on the shores of Lake Michigan. On the day she disappeared, Sofia was kayaking without a life jacket when she drifted away from the shore due to strong winds. Her father tried to swim out to rescue her but was unable to reach the kayak as it was quickly carried further into the lake.
Another man in a canoe attempted to assist, but by the time he reached the kayak, it was empty and adrift about a quarter-mile offshore.
Despite an extensive search by authorities, no sign of Sofia was ever found, and she is presumed to have drowned. At the time of her disappearance, Sofia was 4'2" tall, weighed 60 pounds, and was wearing a lavender one-piece bathing suit. Her case remains open, and although she has never been located, investigators continue to hope for any information that may provide closure for her family.
