On September 9, 1957, 15-year-old Gerald Montrio and his best friend, Robert Rasmussen, disappeared from Plymouth, Massachusetts. The boys left their homes around 3:00 p.m. to go swimming in Massachusetts Bay. Later that day, their clothing was found neatly folded on Flat Rock by Plymouth Harbor, leading authorities to believe the boys had drowned. However, their bodies were never recovered despite extensive searches, including efforts by the U.S. Coast Guard.
Witnesses reported seeing two boys getting in and out of a boat near the harbor, and another claimed to have heard cries for help from the direction of the beach. Some also speculated the boys may have staged their disappearance, as both came from troubled homes and had previously discussed running away to escape their difficult lives. Gerald's sister and Robert's family never believed they drowned, holding onto the hope that they ran away and possibly headed west.
To this day, the mystery remains unsolved, and neither boy has been found. Gerald, originally from Bermuda, spoke both English and Spanish and was known for being mature for his age. His family still hopes for answers more than six decades later.Last Seen: Sep 9, 1957
