Carlene Brown, 19, was last seen on July 4, 1974, in Rawlins, Wyoming. She and her friend, Christy Gross, also 19, attended the Little Britches Rodeo before disappearing. Their vehicle was later found abandoned, with conflicting reports about whether it was left at the fairgrounds or in Worland, Wyoming, over 200 miles away. Authorities initially thought the girls may have left on their own, but suspicion soon grew of foul play as time passed with no contact from them.
In October 1983, Christy’s remains were discovered three miles south of Sinclair, Wyoming. She had been killed by blows to the head. Carlene's whereabouts, however, remain unknown. Around the same time, other disappearances occurred in the Rawlins area, including 10-year-old Jayleen Banker, whose body was later found, and 14-year-old Deborah Meyer, who is still missing.
Royal Russell Long, a carnival worker in the area at the time, has been considered a possible suspect in these cases. He was known for other kidnappings and murders but was never formally charged in connection with Carlene or Christy’s cases.
