On a clear November day in 1980, 21-year-old Harold 'Jeffrey' Mays and his friend, 22-year-old Ted Wall, ventured into the Atlantic Ocean for a fishing trip off the coast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. The two young men were aboard Mays' 23-foot Sea Ox, a vessel known for its durability and described as nearly unsinkable due to its foam flotation design.
