Bruce Falconer, a 21-year-old Marine sergeant, went missing on February 20, 1981, while home on leave in Bismarck, North Dakota. Having enlisted in the Marines at the age of 16, Bruce had recently been promoted and was preparing for a transfer to Yuma, Arizona. On the night of his disappearance, Bruce and his childhood friend, Timothy Jewell, visited several bars in Bismarck before heading to an area south of the city along the Missouri River, known locally as the "Desert."

few days later, Bruce’s vehicle, a Chevrolet Blazer, was found stuck in the mud near the river. The scene revealed cigarette butts and evidence of a campfire, but there was no sign of either man. While there was speculation that Bruce may have gone absent without leave (AWOL) from the Marines, his family strongly believed he would not have abandoned his military career, especially since he left behind uncashed paychecks. His mother suspected early on that something tragic had occurred.
The case took a significant turn in 1992, when a hunter discovered Jewell’s skeletal remains in the same area. Authorities concluded that Jewell likely died of exposure, but Bruce Falconer's body was never found. He was declared legally dead by the Marines five years after his disappearance.
