Helmut Ernst Altmann, a 31-year-old Austrian national, went missing on October 30, 1984, during a business trip to Beverly Hills, California. Altmann had traveled to Los Angeles in late October with plans to invest in local real estate. He checked into the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel on October 26, with a scheduled checkout date of October 31. His return to Austria was booked for November 2.
