Helmut Ernst Altmann, a 31-year-old Austrian national, went missing on October 30, 1984, during a business trip to Beverly Hills, California. Altmann had traveled to Los Angeles in late October with plans to invest in local real estate. He checked into the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel on October 26, with a scheduled checkout date of October 31. His return to Austria was booked for November 2. However, Altmann was last seen in his hotel room on October 30, and he did not return home as planned.
Altmann was believed to have gone sightseeing in the Big Sur area on the day he disappeared, driving a rented white 1984 Chevrolet Camaro, which has also never been recovered. When his wife reported him missing on November 6, 1984, hotel staff discovered his room undisturbed, with his passport, money, clothing, and return airline ticket still inside. Despite these personal effects being left behind, Altmann has not been seen or heard from since, and authorities suspect foul play.
His disappearance remains unsolved, and both his case and the whereabouts of his rental vehicle are still mysteries.
