Sylvia Lourdes Standley, a 31-year-old woman from Modesto, California, went missing on June 3, 1986, under mysterious circumstances. She had just completed a two-week sentence for a drug charge at the Stanislaus County Women's Facility and was released that day. Standley made contact with her family, informing them that she would return home later, getting a ride with her new boyfriend. However, no one in her family had ever met or even knew the identity of this boyfriend.
She was last seen getting into a blue or green truck, but from that moment onward, she was never heard from again. Standley left behind two children, including an eight-month-old baby.
Over the years, Sylvia’s disappearance has remained unsolved, though it has drawn significant suspicion toward notorious criminals Wesley Shermantine and Loren Herzog, also known as the "Speed Freak Killers." These men were implicated in the deaths of several women during the 1980s and 1990s, and investigators have considered them possible suspects in Standley’s case. Shermantine, currently on death row, led authorities to several bodies of missing women, though none of these have been identified as Standley. Herzog, after serving a reduced sentence, took his own life in 2012 when Shermantine began cooperating with authorities.
Some agencies report discrepancies in the exact timeline of her disappearance, with dates such as May 29 or June 6 also being mentioned. Distinguishing features of Sylvia included her light brown hair, hazel eyes, a V-shaped scar on her knee, and an appendectomy scar. She was also missing two upper front teeth at the time.
