In the summer of 1991, in Ashtabula, Ohio, a 14-year-old boy named Donnell White Jr. vanished, leaving behind a swirl of conflicting accounts and unanswered questions. On August 10th of that year, Donnell, who was living with his grandmother at the time, was last seen. His parents were divorced, and the narratives of his final known hours differ significantly. His mother reported that after having dinner, Donnell went to a nearby basketball court to play and never came back. Other neighborhood children later confirmed they had played basketball with him that evening on West 47th Street. However, another version of events, initially believed by his father, suggested that Donnell had gone on a fishing trip with a local Hispanic man known as "Chicago" and never returned. The initial investigation into Donnell's disappearance was hampered by these conflicting stories and a lack of substantial leads. Because he had briefly run away from his mother's home a couple of weeks prior, he was first classified as an endangered runaway. This classification was later changed to an endangered missing child. The man known as "Chicago," whose real identity was known to police, was questioned about his supposed fishing trip with Donnell and his alleged involvement in illegal cockfighting, which he had reportedly introduced the boy to. He denied taking Donnell to a cockfight or giving him a fighting rooster and passed a voice stress analysis test. In the years that followed, the case grew cold. Donnell's mother eventually moved away, first to Cleveland and then to California, and changed her name. His father, however, remained in Ashtabula, holding out hope for answers. Years later, in 2012, at the persistent request of his father, the Ashtabula Police Department reopened Donnell's case, though no new evidence was immediately uncovered. The investigation received renewed attention in 2020 when local detectives partnered with the U.S. Marshals Missing Child Unit, breathing new life into the decades-old mystery. This collaboration led to a nationwide effort, with investigators conducting interviews and following up on leads across the country. A significant challenge in the renewed investigation has been the scarcity of clear photographs of Donnell at the age he disappeared; the widely circulated image was taken several years prior and may not be an accurate likeness. Despite the passage of time, law enforcement and Donnell's father remain committed to uncovering the truth of what happened to the "happy-go-lucky kid" who loved fishing and basketball. Investigators now believe that whatever happened to Donnell occurred within a very narrow timeframe and that the person responsible was likely someone he knew. The case remains an active investigation, with authorities believing he may be deceased, and a reward is being offered for any information that could finally bring closure to his family.
