John Anthony Perez, aged 38, was last seen on January 13, 1998, when he and a friend, Raul Diaz, embarked on a fishing trip from Miami to the Bahamas. The two were traveling on a 25-foot blue and white 1986 Offshore open fishing boat. They were accompanied by two other friends in a separate boat. During their journey, rough seas caused Perez and Diaz to lose contact with the second boat. Neither Perez nor Diaz were ever seen again, and their boat has never been found.
