On the evening of May 22, 2003, 32-year-old Gary James Swanson, a man described by his family as religious and family-oriented, was last seen by relatives at his home in Aledo, Illinois. At approximately 7:30 p.m., in the area of the 1400 block of 120th Avenue, his family saw him for the last time. Before he vanished, Swanson left a note and a voicemail for his family, telling them not to worry and that he would be safe. At the time of his disappearance, he was known to be a very tall man, standing at six feet eight inches and weighing around 225 pounds. He has brown hair, blue eyes, and requires glasses with silver wire frames. Swanson was last seen wearing a white t-shirt with a Chevrolet emblem, blue jeans, and size 14 brown Red Wing work boots. Distinctive features include a tattoo of a bulldog with the words "Big Dog" on his right shoulder blade and another bulldog tattoo on his right inner ankle.
The circumstances surrounding Gary Swanson's disappearance became more alarming in the days that followed. Later on the same evening he was last seen, his dog was found tied up at a local convenience store. Two days later, his vehicle, a 2001 Chevrolet Malibu, was discovered abandoned and burned on a county road in Loraine, Illinois, near Quincy. This discovery prompted a search of the rural area by authorities and local volunteers. A tracking dog reportedly found some tracks in the dense woods, and there was a possible but unconfirmed sighting of someone in the woods around the time the car was found. There were other unconfirmed sightings of Swanson in the week following his disappearance; he was possibly seen hitchhiking near Bushnell and may have been spotted in the Greenview cemetery on May 29, but these leads were never verified.

Despite the years that have passed, his family has not given up hope, and the Mercer County Sheriff's Office continues to list the case as an active investigation, seeking any information that might shed light on what happened to Gary Swanson.
