In the spring of 1985, 26-year-old Michael Lawrence Limesand was living in Freeport, Illinois. On the evening of May 25th, he spent time with a friend. They reportedly went to a local McDonald's and then to Knape Park to talk. At approximately 7:45 p.m., his friend dropped him off at his apartment located at 941 W. Stephenson Street. This would be the last confirmed time anyone saw Michael. Around 8:30 p.m. that same evening, his mother attempted to contact him by phone but received no answer. It is believed he disappeared sometime within that 45-minute window. There was also a possibility that he may have traveled to Dubuque, Iowa, on the day he went missing.
Because it was Memorial Day weekend, Michael was not expected at his job at Micro Switch until the following Tuesday, May 28th. When he failed to show up for work or call, his employer contacted his family, who then grew concerned and alerted the Freeport Police Department. Upon investigation, authorities found Michael's car parked near his residence. Inside the vehicle were letters his sister had asked him to mail for her. All of his personal belongings, including his checkbook, credit cards, clothing, and an uncashed paycheck, were discovered inside his apartment. There was no activity on his bank accounts or credit cards after his disappearance.
At the time he went missing, Michael was described as a white male, 5'9' tall and weighing 140 pounds, with brown hair and green eyes. He had a distinctive concave breastbone and a scar on his right arm. He was believed to be wearing a unicorn necklace, a gold ring with a one-karat diamond, and a gold wedding band. Eight years prior to his disappearance, Michael had served in the Marines. Foul play is suspected in his case, and in 1992, Michael Limesand was declared legally dead. The investigation into his disappearance remains open, a long-standing cold case in Freeport. The circumstances surrounding what happened to him after his friend dropped him off that May evening remain a mystery.
