Darrin Frank Bunker, 41 years old, went missing on October 3, 2007, after setting sail from Dana Point Harbor, California. He left in his 30-foot sailboat, the *Bug Trap*, intending to travel to San Diego, a trip of roughly 60 miles. Bunker was never heard from again after that morning.
Months later, on January 6, 2008, his sailboat was found adrift near the coast of Kauai, Hawaii, more than 2,600 miles away from Dana Point. The boat was severely damaged, with a broken mast and fire damage inside the cabin, although no signs of foul play were identified. Personal belongings, including food, cigarettes, and Bunker's laptop, were still on board, and investigators concluded that the fire likely started accidentally. Despite the extensive search, no trace of Bunker has been found, and authorities suspect he may have been lost at sea.
Originally from Michigan, Bunker had moved to California after quitting his job in 2005, living a somewhat solitary lifestyle. His family, who had not heard from him since he left Michigan, only learned of his disappearance after news of the missing boat emerged. Bunker was not an experienced sailor, leading authorities to believe that an unfortunate accident may have occurred during his voyage.
