On a crisp autumn day, October 2, 2008, 77-year-old Jack Nels Gordon, a retired teacher, left his apartment on Miranda Street in Fort Garland, Colorado. A husband and father to seven children, he was heading to a five-acre home-site he owned that was under construction.
