On a crisp autumn day, October 2, 2008, 77-year-old Jack Nels Gordon, a retired teacher, left his apartment on Miranda Street in Fort Garland, Colorado. A husband and father to seven children, he was heading to a five-acre home-site he owned that was under construction. The property was located on the southeast end of Luke Road in the Forbes Trinchera Ranches, also known as the Sangre De Cristo Ranches. Mr.
Gordon was driving his 1994 Chevrolet and was last seen wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt, faded blue denim jeans, and light-colored moccasin-style loafers. He also wore eyeglasses. It is believed he was returning to the property because he thought he might have left his misplaced glasses there. His family was aware that he suffered from a severe form of vertigo, a condition that could at times cause him to become immobile.
Later that day, Mr. Gordon's 1994 Chevrolet was discovered at his Luke Road property, but there was no sign of him. An extensive search of the area was launched by the Costilla County Sheriff's Office, aided by volunteers. Search and rescue teams on ATVs and horseback, along with search dogs, combed a radius of more than a mile around the home-site where his car was found. Despite these thorough efforts, no physical trace of Jack Gordon was ever located. The complete lack of evidence or any indication of his whereabouts left his family and investigators with a baffling mystery.
The disappearance of Jack Gordon has remained an open and unsolved case, leaving his wife and seven children with unanswered questions. Interestingly, a neighbor of Gordon's, a convicted felon named John Fureigh, also disappeared on the very same day. Authorities have been unable to determine if the two disappearances are connected, and Fureigh's whereabouts also remain unknown. Without any significant leads over the many years since he was last seen, the case has grown cold. The official investigation, led by the Costilla County Sheriff's Office, continues to seek any information that might shed light on what happened to Jack Nels Gordon on that October day in 2008.
