On May 18, 1984, 28-year-old Tom Phifer and his girlfriend, 36-year-old Kay Hollis, departed from his home in Denver, Colorado. Their plan was to travel to Grand Junction, a journey of about 250 miles. They were traveling in Phifer's green 1972 Ford Pinto, which had the Colorado license plate number AGB319.
