In the spring of 1967, a young mother named Alice Marie Reeves was attempting to build a new life for herself and her infant daughter in the small Louisiana communities of Ville Platte and Mamou. At just 19 years old, Alice was already a mother of two, having placed her first child, a son, for adoption. She was known to have brown hair and brown eyes and had a scar on her left foot. In an effort to leave a difficult past behind, which included involvement in sex work, she was training to become a hairdresser. Friends and family say she adored her baby girl and that it would have been completely out of character for her to abandon her child. Her last known address was on New Street in Ville Platte, where she lived with her boyfriend, Joffrey Bertrand. On May 25, 1967, Alice dropped off her four-month-old daughter at a babysitter's house in Mamou, intending to go to her job at a local beauty shop. Tragically, she never returned to pick up her child and was never seen or heard from again. For many years, the official circumstances surrounding her disappearance remained unclear, with the original 1967 case report having been lost. Despite the passage of time, her daughter, who was raised by Alice's cousin, never gave up hope of finding answers. Upon learning the truth of her mother's disappearance at the age of 15, she began her own decades-long search for the truth. Foul play is strongly suspected in Alice's disappearance, and her live-in boyfriend at the time, Joffrey Bertrand, is considered the prime suspect. Bertrand had a criminal record and a known history of domestic violence. Authorities believe he may have murdered Alice, though he was never charged in connection with her disappearance and is now deceased. The case was eventually handed over from Calcasieu Parish to the Evangeline Parish Sheriff's Office. Over the years, Alice's daughter has pieced together fragments of her mother's life, learning about her work in local clubs and even that she witnessed a murder in Lake Charles a couple of years before she vanished. The case remains an active investigation, with law enforcement and her family still hoping to one day recover her remains and bring a sense of closure to this long and painful chapter.
