On September 3, 1983, a camping trip on the shores of Lake Huron marked the beginning of a long and sorrowful mystery for the family of 15-year-old Joseph "Joey" Michael Gutierrez. Joey, a resident of Detroit, and his 16-year-old friend, Christopher Jedra, were dropped off by Christopher's parents for an overnight adventure in a wooded area near South Point in Sanborn Township, Michigan. The boys, who had met through the Sea Cadets, a pre-Navy program, set up their tent just fifty feet from the shore. When Christopher's parents returned the next day to pick them up, they discovered a scene that was both ordinary and deeply unsettling. The campsite was intact, but the boys were gone. The discovery of the deserted campsite triggered an extensive search effort involving ground, water, and air teams. The scene left behind offered few clues; the tent was set up, containing their boots and unrolled sleeping bags. Outside, their pants were on the ground, while their t-shirts and underwear were left hanging on the tent. The boys' dog was found tied to the tent, with water but an empty food dish, suggesting the boys had not been gone long, as they had only used one of the three cans of dog food they brought. The search continued for over two weeks until, on September 19, a tragic discovery was made. Christopher Jedra's body was found floating half a mile from the shore of North Point. This devastating development confirmed the worst fears for one family, while leaving Joey's family in a painful state of uncertainty. Despite the extensive searches, Joseph Gutierrez was never located. The prevailing theory held by law enforcement is that both boys drowned while attempting to swim to Bird Island, located about half a mile from their campsite. This theory is supported by the fact that Joey was not a strong swimmer, and the water between the shore and the island, though not deeper than twelve feet, could still pose a significant danger. The boys were last seen likely wearing either swim trunks or cutoff jeans. A knife sheath found with their abandoned belongings suggests Joey may have been carrying a pocket knife. For decades, the case has remained a painful open wound for his loved ones, a story of a youthful adventure that ended in tragedy and a disappearance that has yet to be solved.
