On a summer day, July 18, 1992, 37-year-old Raymond Dewayne Sears, an electrician from the Kalamazoo area, boarded a single-engine plane with his wife and another couple for what was supposed to be a pleasant weekend getaway to Beaver Island in Lake Michigan. The white and brown 1978 Cessna was piloted by his friend, Tom Lammon. The two couples, all from the Kalamazoo area, took off from Battle Creek, Michigan, around 10:30 in the morning for the roughly two-hour flight north. The weather was fair when they departed, but conditions grew cloudier as they progressed toward their destination. The flight path took them over the Leelanau Peninsula, a common route to Beaver Island. Around noon, as the plane was approximately 35 miles out from the island and preparing for its landing, it disappeared from radar screens. The last known position of the aircraft was near the tip of the Leelanau Peninsula. In the moments before losing contact, there was no indication of any trouble aboard the aircraft. The sudden disappearance of the Cessna triggered an extensive search and rescue operation involving state and local authorities, the Civil Air Patrol, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Despite the intensive search efforts by air, land, and water, no significant wreckage of the plane was ever discovered. Weeks after the disappearance, on August 3rd, a small aircraft tire was found on a beach near Good Hart, along with several pieces of fiberglass that matched the color of the missing Cessna. This discovery prompted renewed and more focused search efforts in that area, but tragically, no further signs of the plane or the four people on board were ever found. The case of Raymond Sears and his companions remains a painful mystery, with their plane believed to be resting somewhere in the depths of northern Lake Michigan. The families were left without answers, and the vibrant lives of two couples were cut short in an instant. The incident stands as a somber reminder of the unforgiving nature of the Great Lakes and the enduring pain of unresolved loss.
