Steven Lincoln Lombard, a 34-year-old tow truck driver from Merced, California, was last seen on December 17, 1993. That day, Lombard left his home with the intention of picking up his paycheck from RTS Towing, where he worked, and doing some Christmas shopping. However, due to a clerical error, he was unable to collect his check and never returned home. He had also planned to meet his wife later, but never made it.
Lombard's maroon and white 1965 Ford F-250 pickup truck was later found abandoned in a K-Mart parking lot in south Merced. Inside the vehicle, a cup of coffee was found on the console, with the keys left in the ignition, the windows rolled down, and the doors unlocked—details that were noted as unusual behavior for Lombard. Suspiciously, two hours before Lombard vanished, another tow truck driver from RTS Towing, Paul Armstrong, also disappeared. Despite both working at the same company, Lombard and Armstrong were not close, and there was no indication that they would have gone anywhere together. Investigators have considered whether the two cases are related but have not confirmed any direct connection.
Both disappearances are considered suspicious, and their cases have been treated as potential homicides. Armstrong had reportedly believed that illegal activities were happening at work, and Lombard had a dispute with his boss on the day he vanished. Despite various leads, including the condition of Lombard's truck, both cases remain unsolved. Investigators continue to seek information regarding their disappearances.
