The following day, October 20, Machek spoke with Johnson over the phone, mentioning he was going to spend the day with a new, younger friend named Edgardo 'Eddie' Perez, whom he had recently met at a local health club. This was the last time anyone would hear from Gordon Machek.
Concern grew when Johnson was unable to reach Machek on October 21. The situation escalated on October 22, when Johnson was alerted to an unusual transaction on Machek's credit card in Mexico.
