The story of Charles 'Chuck' Duke's disappearance began on a summer day in 2003 in the rugged terrain of Vogel Canyon, located in Otero County, Colorado. On or around August 17th, the 56-year-old U.S. Army veteran was with a female companion, Pam, driving a blue and gray minivan on an unpaved road, making their way to the Vogel Canyon Picnic Area. Their journey was abruptly halted when the vehicle became 'high-centered,' getting stuck and unable to move.
Faced with this predicament, and with his companion unable to make the trek, Charles, who did not have a driver's license, decided to set out on foot to find help. After wandering together for several hours trying to locate the picnic area, they made the decision to separate around noon on August 18th. He went on alone, while she stayed behind. This was the last time anyone reported seeing Charles Duke.
Following Charles's departure, his companion, Pam, was eventually found by a local rancher and brought back to the nearby town of La Junta. Once the alarm was raised, an extensive search of the area was launched. Search and rescue teams scoured the landscape on foot and from the air, but their efforts yielded no trace of the missing man. Charles was described as being 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighing approximately 155 pounds at the time he went missing. He had brown hair, hazel eyes, and a noticeable scar on his right elbow. A veteran of the Vietnam War, he had sustained a gunshot wound during his service. The minivan they had been traveling in was located two days later in a pasture some distance from where they had become stuck.
Weeks after he vanished, a perplexing and tragic event occurred that some have speculated could be connected to his case, though no official link has ever been established. In late September 2003, a residence owned by Charles in Ordway, Colorado, where his niece and her family were living, was the site of an explosion and fire. The incident was determined to be the result of arson and resulted in severe burns to a man and three children, all of whom fortunately recovered. Despite the suspicious nature of the fire, authorities have not been able to connect it to Charles's disappearance. The case of Charles Duke remains an unsolved and troubling mystery.
