Steve Keller, a 76-year-old experienced outdoorsman from Palo Alto, California, went missing on September 2, 2023, while on a group hike in the Wind River Mountains near Lander, Wyoming. Keller was last seen at Steamboat Lake, where he and his group were camping. He became separated from the group while hiking toward Deadman Lake, leaving his backpack behind at the campsite.
Despite his extensive experience in the wilderness, including previous trips in this area, Keller's disappearance led to an intensive search effort. Bad weather, including thunderstorms, delayed aerial search operations. Ground and air teams, including personnel from the Wyoming National Guard and local search and rescue units, scoured the rugged terrain, but no trace of Keller was found.
After over a week of search efforts, the Fremont County Sheriff's Office suspended the official search on September 11, 2023, and Keller is presumed deceased. His family, however, has expressed the possibility of continuing the search through private means.Last Seen: Sep 2, 2023
