Kali Athukorala, a 1-year-old girl from Belchertown, Massachusetts, was abducted by her mother, Sandra Clarissa Zemialkowski, on April 13, 2009. Sandra had initially taken Kali to the Dominican Republic in December 2007, with permission from Kali's father, Dhanika Athukorala, for a two-month visit to see family. However, Sandra failed to return Kali as promised.
Despite a court ruling in 2009 that granted full custody of Kali to Dhanika and ordered her return, Sandra refused to comply and remained in the Dominican Republic with Kali.
Kali is believed to be living with her mother and her grandparents in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic. Efforts have been made under the Hague Convention on International Child Abduction to bring Kali back to the United States, but the Dominican Republic has not taken action, citing Sandra's rights and the fact that the parents were never married.
