On September 17, 2009, 21-year-old Kaila Aileen Morris, a student at Mississippi State University, was visiting her family's home in the New Hope community of Columbus, Mississippi. Her mother, Bonnie, was away on vacation in Florida at the time, leaving Kaila with her stepfather, Robert "Butch" Triplett. That evening, Kaila vanished. Her stepfather was the last person to report seeing her.
He told investigators that he saw Kaila get into a dark-colored van or SUV at their residence around 8:00 PM. According to his account, Kaila had mentioned she was going to visit her best friend, Labriska Walker, and her godson in Carrollton, Alabama. However, Kaila never arrived at her friend's house. Adding to the mystery, her friend reportedly showed up at the family home just minutes after Kaila had supposedly left.
The circumstances surrounding Kaila's disappearance were immediately alarming to her family and friends. She left behind all of her personal belongings, including her purse, car, her beloved bulldog, and daily medication. This was considered highly out of character for the young woman, who was described as shy, cautious, and responsible. Her mother, upon learning Kaila never made it to her friend's house, knew something was terribly wrong and urged her husband to report her daughter missing the following day. The Lowndes County Sheriff's Office began an investigation, initially unsure if they were dealing with a crime or a potential runaway case. However, the fact that Kaila had left everything behind strongly suggested she did not leave on her own. She had distinctive tattoos, including a red rose with a green leaf on the second toe of her left foot, and a star and moon with her name, "KAILA," on the inside of her right ankle.
As the investigation into Kaila's disappearance progressed, suspicion fell on her stepfather, Robert Triplett. He told investigators a series of unusual stories, including that Kaila had asked him to wash her bedsheets before she left and that he had gone to check on a property she owned in Alabama late at night, taking an ax and a shovel with him. During the investigation, a search of computers seized from the home uncovered hundreds of images of child pornography, leading to Triplett's arrest in October 2009. While these charges were separate from Kaila's case, his criminal history, which included past sex-related crimes, drew further scrutiny. Triplett was ultimately convicted on the pornography charges and sentenced to 40 years in prison. Despite being the last person to see her and the suspicious circumstances, he has never been charged in connection with her disappearance and has denied any involvement. Over the years, searches have been conducted and leads have been pursued by the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office, but no trace of Kaila Morris has ever been found.
