Lyrian Wyvonne Barry-Stallings, a 22-year-old mother, disappeared on July 1, 1960, after boarding a Greyhound bus in Columbus, Mississippi, bound for St. Louis, Missouri. She had planned to stay with her aunt in St. Louis and hoped to start a new life for herself and her young daughter, Gloria, following a troubled relationship with her partner, Eulice "Eddie" Stallings, who was known for his controlling behavior and involvement with drugs. Upon her departure, Lyrian left her daughter with her sister, promising to return in August to take her sister along to St. Louis. However, she was never heard from again.
Lyrian's family did not immediately report her missing, as they initially believed she might be starting anew. Eventually, they grew increasingly worried when months passed without any contact. Over the years, her family learned that her Social Security number had never been used again, and there was no forwarding address or any official documentation indicating her whereabouts after her departure. Several unverified sightings were reported in New England and other areas, but none led to any breakthroughs. Her family, including surviving siblings, continues to search for answers, even though many, including her daughter, have since passed away.
Multiple theories surround Lyrian’s disappearance. Some family members believe her partner, Stallings, may have played a role, while others suspect Sonny Lucas, another man involved in her life at the time, due to a violent altercation between the two shortly before she vanished. Despite efforts by the family to reopen investigations and find closure, the case remains unsolved after more than six decades.
