Richard Alicea, a 30-year-old man, went missing on December 12, 2009, after leaving Haulover Beach Marina in Miami, Florida, with his friend Edwin Pritchard. The two men were on a boating trip to Bimini, Bahamas, a journey they had successfully completed before. However, they never arrived at their destination. On the day of their departure, there was a small craft warning in effect, with dangerous conditions at sea, including strong winds and choppy waters.
