In the late winter of 2012, the life of Marjorie 'Gayle' McCaffrey, a 36-year-old mother of two, took a turn that would leave her family and community with years of unanswered questions. Known by her middle name, Gayle, she was last seen at her home on Limestone Boulevard in the West Ashley area of Charleston, South Carolina. Her husband, Robert McCaffrey, told authorities that on the afternoon of March 17, 2012, he and Gayle had an argument after returning from a meal.
He claimed that he then went for a walk, and upon his return, found Gayle in bed and unresponsive to him. He stated that he left the home again later that evening. When he returned the following morning, he said Gayle was gone, leaving their two young children, ages ten and four, asleep in the house.
The scene left behind was unsettling and filled with contradictions. Gayle's Jeep, cell phone, wallet, and checkbook were all left at the residence. A typed goodbye letter was also found, in which she purportedly stated her intention to be with another man and asked her husband not to look for her. However, Gayle's family immediately cast doubt on the letter's authenticity, noting that it contained language uncharacteristic of the devout Baptist who was an active member of her church choir. Adding to the mystery, her husband claimed a 350-pound safe containing a significant amount of cash and a gun was missing from the home, a claim that was later disputed by their daughter and other relatives who said no such safe existed. Her wedding band was also left behind.
As the investigation into Gayle's disappearance unfolded, suspicion quickly fell upon her husband. Authorities discovered that Robert had been having an extramarital affair, a fact Gayle was aware of. In May 2012, police announced they believed Gayle had been murdered and named Robert as the primary suspect. The investigation into his wife's disappearance led to his conviction for obstruction of justice in March 2019, for which he was sentenced to ten years in prison. He was subsequently paroled in 2023. While a grand jury declined to indict him for Gayle's murder in 2018, that same year a probate court judge declared her legally dead and held her husband responsible, ensuring their children would be the beneficiaries of her estate. In a significant development in 2026, Robert McCaffrey was charged with the 1990 murder of a New Jersey woman, Lisa Marie McBride, following advancements in DNA technology.
