Erik, who had been struggling with bipolar disorder and substance abuse, had traveled to Northern California, possibly intending to reach Oregon to enter a sober living facility. His silver 2004 Honda Odyssey broke down in Leggett, and he stayed at a hotel in Laytonville while repairs were being made.
