Kelsey Lynn Smith, a 17-year-old from Anthony, Florida, tragically lost her life on January 8, 2021. The incident occurred in a mobile home located in the 1600 block of Northeast 97th Street Road. According to reports, Kelsey was fatally shot in the head by her boyfriend, also 17, who claimed the shooting was accidental. The boyfriend stated that he was cleaning a gun given to him by another individual when the firearm accidentally discharged while he was playing with it, spinning it around his finger. The bullet struck Kelsey, who was lying on the bed at the time.

Following the shooting, the boyfriend immediately called 911 and went to Kelsey's parents' home to inform them of the incident. He expressed remorse and indicated his willingness to face the consequences. The Marion County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene, where they found Kelsey deceased with the gun beside her. The boyfriend was subsequently arrested and charged with manslaughter and possession of a firearm by a minor. He was taken to a juvenile assessment center for booking.

The case took a significant turn when the State Attorney's Office decided to try the boyfriend as an adult due to the severity of the crime and his age. During a bail hearing, the victim's family and prosecutors objected to his release, citing his previous criminal record and the violent nature of the incident. The judge denied bail, and the boyfriend remained in custody at the Marion County Jail. The case was marked as the first domestic violence homicide in Marion County for 2021, highlighting the tragic consequences of gun-related accidents and domestic violence.
