Matthew Greene, a 39-year-old high school math teacher from Pennsylvania, went missing on July 16, 2013, while hiking in the Mammoth Lakes area of California. Greene was an experienced outdoorsman, spending the summer of 2013 climbing with friends in the Eastern Sierra Nevada mountains. His car developed mechanical problems, and while waiting for repairs at a local shop, Greene decided to stay behind and continue hiking solo in the area.
The last contact anyone had with him was on July 16, when he spoke with his parents and mentioned plans for another day of hiking in the mountains. His last known location was near the Ansel Adams Wilderness, where his phone last pinged. Greene was camping at Shady Rest Campground, but when he failed to pick up his car or return to his campsite, a missing person report was filed on July 29.
Authorities found some of Greene’s belongings, including a guidebook with missing pages detailing the route to Mount Ritter, leading them to suspect he may have been attempting to climb that peak. However, despite extensive searches in difficult terrain, no trace of Greene has been found, and he was eventually declared legally dead.
