In the small city of Port Angeles, Washington, a mother's disappearance has left a void in her family and community for over five decades. Bertha Louise Burke, a 29-year-old woman, was last seen at her home on East 13th Street on February 20, 1970. A mother of three young children, all under the age of six, she seemingly vanished after tucking them into bed. When morning came, the children were alone, and their mother was gone, having left behind her purse and all of her personal belongings. At the time she went missing, Bertha, who sometimes went by her middle name, Louise, was in the midst of a divorce from her husband, Douglas Burke, citing cruelty as the grounds. The circumstances surrounding Bertha's disappearance immediately raised concerns of foul play. She was reportedly seeing another man at the time of her disappearance, but her estranged husband became a person of interest in the investigation. The divorce was not finalized until several months after she was last seen. Despite the suspicions, the case grew cold over the years, leaving her children to grow up without their mother and with no answers about what happened to her. The case was eventually classified as a homicide, though no trace of Bertha was ever found. Decades later, in 2003, a glimmer of hope for resolution emerged as investigators reopened the case, armed with new technology. With the help of the FBI, authorities used ground-penetrating radar and cadaver dogs to search two key locations: the driveway of Bertha's former home and a parking lot behind her husband's old workplace. The radar detected an anomaly beneath a concrete slab, but an excavation of the area yielded no evidence. No further searches have been planned. Douglas Burke, who remarried after his wife's disappearance, passed away in 2008; his obituary reportedly stated that Bertha had died in February 1970, the same month she vanished. The disappearance of Bertha Louise Burke remains an unsolved case, a painful mystery for her loved ones who are still seeking closure so many years later.
