On a windy day in Washington, 35-year-old Lena Lang vanished into the deep, cold waters of Lake Crescent in Olympic National Park on October 27, 2019. She was visiting the picturesque lake with a friend and had gone out onto the water on an inflatable pool toy. Her friend watched as the wind pushed her across the water before she and the inflatable overturned. That was the last time Lena was ever seen. She was wearing a black two-piece swimsuit and, tragically, did not know how to swim. A 9-1-1 call was made shortly after, sparking an immediate and large-scale search for the missing woman in the vast and formidable lake. The search for Lena was extensive, involving a multitude of agencies and advanced technology. The National Park Service led the effort, which for two weeks included searches by boat, from the shoreline, and from the air with help from the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Coast Guard. The Clallam County Sheriff's Office also joined the search on the water. The sheer size and depth of Lake Crescent posed a significant challenge; with a surface area of over 5,000 acres and depths exceeding 600 feet, the search area was immense. Specialized teams, including the Kitsap County Dive Team, were brought in. Divers were able to search to a depth of 100 feet, but to probe the deeper sections of the lake, a Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) with side-sonar capabilities was utilized to scan the lakebed for any sign of Lena. Despite the comprehensive two-week search and the dozens of tips received from the public, no trace of Lena Lang was found. Her inflatable raft was also not recovered in the initial search. The vastness and extreme depth of Lake Crescent have, for now, held the secret of her final moments. The incident serves as a heartbreaking reminder of the potential dangers present in even the most beautiful natural settings. As of August 2019, park rangers were still seeking to locate her. The case remains a sorrowful mystery, a story of a beautiful day that turned to tragedy, leaving family and friends with unanswered questions and an enduring loss.
