In the autumn of 1986, a 41-year-old man named Frederick 'Fred' Lee Cain was residing at a health care facility in Lakewood, Colorado. On October 21, he departed the facility, which was located near the intersection of West Colfax Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard, with the stated intention of attending an appointment in downtown Denver.
