On February 6, 2003, Kristin Marie Snyder, a 35-year-old self-employed environmental consultant, disappeared after leaving a session of the Executive Success Programs (ESP) in Anchorage, Alaska. Friends and her partner had noted that Kristin, an avid and experienced outdoorswoman, had been acting irrational and seemed depressed in the days leading up to her vanishing. Concern for her well-being grew when she did not return to pick up the people she had traveled with to the seminar. Later that evening, her partner, Heidi Clifford, became alarmed by Kristin's recent unusual behavior, which included discussions of suicide, and reported her missing to the Anchorage Police Department. The day after Kristin was last seen, her black 1999 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck was discovered abandoned at Miller's Landing, a resort area for camping and kayaking in Seward, about 125 miles from Anchorage. The key was in the unlocked driver's side door. Inside the vehicle, investigators found handwritten notes. One note was unsettling, stating, "I was brainwashed and my emotional center of the brain was killed/turned off... I am sorry life; I didn't know I was already dead." A separate page simply said, "No need to search for my body." The discovery of the truck and its contents triggered an extensive search of the Resurrection Bay area. It was also discovered that a handmade white wood and fiberglass kayak was missing from the resort. This particular kayak had not been used in 15 years, had no rudder, and was not equipped for flotation, meaning it would likely sink if it tipped over in the frigid waters. A three-day search by air and on land yielded no trace of Kristin or the missing kayak. The circumstances surrounding Kristin's disappearance are complex and have left many questions unanswered for years. Her involvement with Executive Success Programs, a company later rebranded as NXIVM and widely identified as a cult, became a central point of inquiry. Reports emerged that during the seminar on the day she disappeared, Kristin had been distressed, claiming she was pregnant with the child of NXIVM's leader, Keith Raniere. She was reportedly removed from the class after this outburst. While authorities have leaned toward the theory that Kristin took the unstable kayak into Resurrection Bay with the intention of taking her own life, some of her friends find this scenario unlikely. They point out that her state of mind would have made it difficult to drive the long distance to Seward, break into a shed to take a heavy kayak, and launch it into the bay. Despite the official presumption of her death in 2004, her body has never been found, and the case officially remains an unsolved missing person's case.
