In the late summer of 2013, the life of 19-year-old Zachary Malinowski was tragically cut short, leaving his family and community with unanswered questions and a grief that endures. A resident of Conway, South Carolina, Zachary had been staying with his grandparents in Aynor. On a Sunday in late August, he spent time with friends playing basketball. After the game, he dropped one friend off and went with another to a woman's house on 7th Avenue in Aynor, staying until about 11:30 p.m.
Zachary reportedly left to get something to eat and head home. The last known contact with him was a phone call shortly after midnight. He was described as wearing a long red t-shirt, black basketball shorts, and either black and white Nike Air Jordans or flip-flops.
The days that followed his disappearance were filled with mounting concern. A week after he was last seen, his dark purple 1996 Chevrolet Beretta was discovered in a wooded area off of Valley Forge Road near Aynor. The car had been completely destroyed by fire. This discovery intensified the fears of his loved ones and pointed to a sinister turn of events. Search dogs were brought to the scene, but after a few hours, the search was called off. Despite extensive efforts by law enforcement and community members, including searches conducted by the CUE Center for Missing Persons, Zachary was not found. In a significant development, two men, Christopher Anfony Brown and Javon Dion Gibbs, were arrested and charged with the kidnapping and murder of Zachary Malinowski.
