Prior to his disappearance, Garmire had displayed troubling behavior, including giving the deed to his property to an acquaintance and leaving notes suggesting suicide. He also told a friend that if he took his own life, no one would ever find his body. Garmire left behind all his personal belongings, including his clothes, motorcycle, and boat, and vanished without a trace.
On October 6, 1990, his brown Ford truck was discovered parked in a yellow zone on Folsom Street in San Francisco. Shortly after his disappearance, over $4,000 was charged to his credit cards, though the signatures did not appear to be his. Despite these charges, there have been no confirmed sightings of him. Garmire was known for his love of outdoor activities, including hunting, backpacking, and boat building, and had once expressed an interest in moving to Washington to pursue boat-building in Port Townsend.
