Harvey Dubs, 30, his wife Deborah, and their 16-month-old son, Sean, were last seen on July 25, 1984, at their San Francisco apartment. Harvey had placed an ad to sell video equipment, and on the day they disappeared, two men responded to the ad and visited the family’s apartment. After Deborah ended a phone call with a friend to greet the visitors, the family was never heard from again.
A neighbor reported seeing an Asian man leaving the apartment with a box later that day, and another vehicle was observed driving away the next day.
Investigators linked the Dubs family’s disappearance to the infamous serial killers Leonard Lake and Charles Ng. Both men were known for luring victims, often randomly, and subjecting them to brutal crimes. The Dubs family is believed to have been abducted, tortured, and murdered at Lake's remote compound in Wilseyville, California. Evidence, including a receipt in Harvey's name, was later found at the compound. Though remains of other victims were uncovered, the bodies of the Dubs family were never recovered.
Lake was arrested in 1985 but committed suicide while in custody, taking many secrets to his grave. Ng fled but was later apprehended in Canada and eventually convicted of multiple murders.
