Her recovery was difficult, and despite some physical improvement, she struggled with mental health issues, including confusion and memory problems.
After living with her mother in San Diego for a period to recover, Selena returned to San Francisco in May 1990, where she kept in regular contact with her family.
However, in her final conversation with her mother in October 1991, Selena was evasive and mentioned that her mother should worry if she didn't hear from her within a month or two. Shortly after, Selena disappeared. A private investigator hired by her family reported possible sightings of Selena in San Francisco’s Tenderloin district, but these sightings were never confirmed.
