Rosemary Kunst, a 70-year-old woman from San Anselmo, California, was last seen on August 18, 2000, near Spirit Lake in the Marble Mountain Wilderness of Siskiyou County. Rosemary, an avid hiker, had joined a spiritual retreat organized by the Earth Circle Association, a group focusing on Native American spiritual practices. On the day of her disappearance, she decided to go on a solo hike while the rest of her group was away. She took with her only a sandwich, some trail mix, and her journal.
She was last observed walking towards a ridge in the steep, rugged terrain around the lake, but she never returned to camp.
A large-scale search operation ensued, involving over 150 people, including search teams, helicopters, and sniffer dogs, but little evidence was found. The only clue was a tuft of her hair discovered in heavy brush near the lake. Despite extensive efforts, no other trace of her was uncovered, and the dense, challenging landscape of the area made the search incredibly difficult. Given the rough terrain, authorities believe she may have gotten lost or injured. However, no remains or additional clues have ever been found, leaving her case unresolved to this day.
