In the autumn of 2022, concern began to grow for 39-year-old Derek Alan Reece, a citizen of the Choctaw Nation, who was last seen in Mounds, Oklahoma. A talented artist and avid skateboarder, Derek was known by friends and family for his gentle nature. He had been working at the Bethesda Boys Home in Mounds, the same facility where he had successfully completed a nine-month rehabilitation program. His disappearance was noted when he failed to show up for his job. He was last seen on or around October 1, 2022. Derek is described as being approximately 5'10" tall and weighing around 135 pounds, with brown hair and hazel eyes. He has a distinct tattoo on his right leg. The initial response to Derek's absence involved searches of the Bethesda Boys Home and the surrounding property by law enforcement, including investigators from the Muscogee Nation Lighthorse. These early efforts, however, did not yield any clues as to his whereabouts. All of his personal belongings were left behind at his residence. The alarm for his safety escalated when he uncharacteristically stopped responding to his family's text messages around Thanksgiving of that year. This prolonged silence prompted his sister to formally report him as a missing person in early 2023. As time passed with no sign of Derek, the investigation intensified. In September 2024, nearly two years after he was last seen, the Muscogee Nation law enforcement, with the assistance of Oklahoma Task Force 1 and their cadaver dogs, conducted another thorough search of the property where he had lived and worked. This extensive effort, which also included local volunteers, unfortunately did not lead to a breakthrough in the case. His family grappled with the painful uncertainty, considering possibilities that he may have relapsed or chosen to disappear, but held onto the hope of finding answers. Ultimately, the search for Derek Reece came to an end when he was located and found to be alive.
